Welcome to Cailin Dix's World

We sat down with a scholar athelete to learn a few tricks of the trade at balancing sports and academics.

Have you ever met someone who has a sport every day of the week, and juggles school work every day? If not, meet Cailin Dix. She plays soccer and ice hockey every day of the business week and may have a game on the weekend.

Cailin Dix has been playing on both the soccer and hockey teams for all four years of her high school career. She also played on club teams throughout all of middle school. What that means is that she has had a two hour practice or a two hour game every business day for all of high school, while finding time for school work and friends. She said, “It’s a pretty big time commitment.”

Both soccer and hockey runs in her family. Her dad played hockey in high school and college, and her mother played soccer in college. She has played soccer most of her life. She is a senior in high school and is not taking any easy classes. Most of her friends are on her soccer team, so she gets to see them often. Her average day goes, school, sports, homework, sleep.

Currently, the soccer season is eight games in. Her teams’ record is five wins and three losses. Her position is center mid, which means that she has to distribute the ball to varying players. Cailin was out for the first three games due to an injury, but has fully recovered and is playing. She plays about 20-30 minutes per game, and there is 11 players on the field per team including goalkeepers.

Cailin Dix is excited for the hockey season to start. She plays defense which means that she, primarily, keeps the other team from scoring. She believes that she will become a captain this year. You become a captain by getting voted on by your teammates. The coaches can appoint a captain, but usually go with the players. She said, “It looks good on a college application.” She seems mindful of the future. Last year was her team's’ best season. Their record was five wins eleven losses.

It is amazing that someone could have a sport every day, spend time with friends, and do well in school.  The only time that there is it spend with friends is on the weekends, if any. There is no down time, on a school day, in between school, sports, homework, food, and a reasonable amount of sleep.
