A few students at Souhegan have interests in filmmaking and one of them is senior Garrett McNamee. Last year, he completed Orbit of Osiris, a mysterious thriller about a boy  living alone in the woods for an unexplained reason. It took a lot of time to complete, stretching over his sophomore and junior years of high school but his hard work was worth it. The final result was a beautifully shot and intriguing film.

While Garrett hasn’t been making films for very long,  he is very talented. “I got into filmmaking by watching films,” says McNamee, “There were a lot of films that I liked and films that I didn’t like and I thought I couldn’t make films as bad as the ones I didn’t like so I decided to give it a shot.” This high school hobby drives his dreams as he hopes to be a director in the future.

Garrett’s laidback persona portrays his intelligence without showing off.  It’s easy to speak with and listen to him with his simple style of comfortable clothing and relaxed way of talking. His personality probably contributed to the success of directing the actors in his film.

Garrett  has a  ‘go with the flow attitude’ and works independently when it comes to making films. “I think a lot of people, especially young filmmakers, make the mistake of that you can’t make it on your own, you have to have someone baby you through the way...the best thing I think if anybody wants to get involved in filmmaking, is to just get a camera and start making a film ‘cause what happens is you’ll just start learning from your failures.”

McNamee has a similar attitude regarding the pursuance of his film career because he is not going to go to attend college for film. “I’m not going to study film,” Garrett says. “The reason is I feel that I’d like to pursue it on my own and see what I can accomplish through trial and error.” This admirable individualistic attitude will bring authenticity to his future films and  it will be his artistic vision that makes them great instead of the ideas of others.

You can watch his film here.  It’s easy to see that this high school hobby has the potential to blossom into a successful career in filmmaking. Maybe someday in theaters the name Garrett McNamee will appear on the screen as the director of your new favorite movie.
