David Wieczerzak: Reading Between the (Vineyard) Vines

David Wieczerzak is a man of many talents. Between his shifts at Vineyard Vines and varsity volleyball practice, he also keeps up with his studies as his junior year comes to a close. Wearing a sleeveless shirt and Souhegan bucket hat, he lets off an easygoing vibe and clasps his hands confidently, eager to talk about his life on and off the court.

David has been playing volleyball since his freshman year when he quit baseball and was looking for a new sport to get into. Along with volleyball, he also participates in golf and bowling during the school year. The sport has also brought great memories for him. “Volleyball has had a tremendous impact on my life,” says David. “We’re a bunch of friends who have been friends since first and second grade so playing together has really just brought us that much closer together.”

Some might think it would be difficult to balance a varsity sport, school, and a job but David says it’s all about time management. “In that hour before practice, I always try to do my homework then.”

According to David, his family supports him in all of his activities. His two older brothers, “have really helped me grow up as a person and seeing them go through college has made me realize in high school how much academics need to be a vital part of my life.” He claims his family and friends always push him to try his best and tell him to “shake it off” when he has a bad game.

As for where he gets the inspiration and motivation to succeed, David looks up to basketball player, Kevin Durant. “He’s gone through so much adversity in his younger life,” David says, “so just seeing how he’s been able to fight through that and get to where he is today has really been a big part of my life.”

After he graduates from Souhegan, David has been “looking at a couple scholarship opportunities” and wants to “go to a four year college and do something in the engineering field.” Meanwhile, his goal for his final year of high school? “Achieve a championship in volleyball. That’s our end goal in sight.” Souhegan is in 8th place out of 14 teams and with a record of 5 games won and 5 lost, there’s no saying how the boys will do throughout the rest of the season. Maybe a bout of good luck and some school spirit will secure the team a spot at the top.
